Some people hear a calling and never look back.
For Dr. Ans van der Westhuizen, that moment came in 1986. Living in Pretoria, she felt deeply moved by God’s call to serve those in need – and she acted on it. From that decision, Donato was born.
Fast forward 39 years, and Donato is still faithfully serving the community, proving that compassion and perseverance can change lives for decades.
Where it all began
Under the umbrella of the SAVF (an organisation providing welfare services in Gauteng and KZN), Donato officially registered on 22 June 1986.
Just a month later, they launched their first holiday feeding schemes for local schools. What started as a seasonal project quickly became a regular service, soon joined by joyful Christmas parties where children received treats, gifts, and – perhaps most importantly – the reminder that they are loved and remembered.
The tenants at Donato are independent and provide for their own daily needs.
However, each year they receive a special Christmas food hamper, generously sponsored by Steelmate (Pty) Ltd – a gesture that brings festive joy and reminds our residents that they are valued and remembered.
What Donato Looks Like Today
The Donato housing scheme is now home to around 70 residents – families, single adults, and older individuals who live independently in flats and houses. The flats themselves have a special history – they’re renovated classrooms in an old double-storey school building.
To help sustain their work, Donato runs a second-hand shop selling donated clothing, books, and household items to residents and the public. Every cent goes back into helping those in need.
Spiritual care is also at the heart of Donato’s mission – with Sunday church services offering encouragement and community.
In addition, our church community is blessed with fresh bread every week, kindly supplied by Monument Park SPAR. These thoughtful contributions make a real difference and are deeply appreciated.
And their reach doesn’t stop there: two social workers operate from free offices provided by Donato, serving the broader Hermanstad community.
The Heart Behind the Work
Donato’s projects are powered by volunteers – people who give their time freely, not for recognition, but because they believe in lifting others up.
But here’s the truth:
This work is only possible because of the goodwill of the community. Every donation, every item given, every hour volunteered makes a difference.
If your heart is stirring as you read this, maybe it’s your turn to answer the call.
