You’re Not Alone – Support for Ageing Parents
Let’s be real for a second—nothing quite prepares you for the day when you realise your strong, independent parents might need a little (or a lot) of extra care. I mean, growing up, they were the ones doing everything for us! So it’s hard to imagine a time when roles start to reverse. But the truth is, ageing happens to all of us, and with it comes the need for more support—physically, emotionally, and sometimes medically too.
Now, before you spiral into guilt or stress (believe me, I’ve been there), let me say this: you’re not alone, and you don’t have to do it all by yourself. Life is hectic, and juggling work, family, and caregiving is no small feat. Luckily, South Africa has some truly incredible private facilities that can provide your loved ones with the care they need—and give you peace of mind in the process.
One such gem I had the privilege of visiting recently is Unique Home Based Care, which also runs the Marmanet Frailcare facility in Kempton Park.
I’ll be honest—walking into a frailcare facility for the first time can be a little overwhelming. But this visit? It left me feeling surprisingly calm, deeply grateful, and genuinely inspired. The staff were polite, kind, and professional, quietly going about their work with compassion and care. It felt less like an institution and more like a peaceful, dignified space where people are truly looked after.
I even got to sit down for a chat with Sister Sonja Venter, the incredible woman behind it all. She’s been an ICU-qualified nurse since 1996, and let me tell you—her passion for caring for others runs deep. What stood out most to me was how much emphasis she places not just on physical care, but also on the emotional and mental wellbeing of her patients. It’s not just about ticking boxes—it’s about treating people like people, with warmth and respect.
And here’s something important to remember: choosing frailcare for your parents doesn’t mean you’re giving up on them or love them any less. Not at all. In fact, it shows just how much you care—because you’re making sure they get the best possible support. That said, your presence still means the world to them. If you can, pop in for a weekly visit, bring along some of their favourite treats or snacks—because honestly, the highlight of their week is often seeing familiar faces and enjoying the little joys (and yummy bites) that make life sweet.
I left that visit feeling hopeful. Hopeful that when the time comes, there are good options out there. Hopeful that there are still amazing humans like Sister Sonja and her team, doing this heart-driven work every day. And most of all, hopeful that we don’t have to do this alone.
If you’re starting this journey and need a trusted place to start, I wholeheartedly recommend reaching out to Unique Home Based Care. Here are the details:
